It is a disgracesource He was already wanted for the double murder of two gangland rivals – Mark Short, 23, and his 46-year-old father David – when he lured the officers with a bogus call before killing them in a gun and grenade attack in Hattersley, Tameside.Cregan was jailed in 2013 and sent to HMP Strangeways in Manchester. Last October, psychiatrists decided to send him to Ashworth – where Moors Murderer Ian Brady is among around 200 other patients – permanently.After the disclosure of Cregan’s letters, one source familiar with Ashworth suggested he had “played on his paranoia” to get into the unit.They told the Daily Mirror: “It is appalling what he has done, but it is like a holiday camp in there for him. He is laughing at us. It is a disgrace.” He also told how he enjoys tennis, snooker and kayaking, while describing how he is allowed to cook pizzas “that will be my treat every week”, but is not allowed knives due to his violent history.An Ashworth spokesman said: “We are unable to discuss patients because of rules governing confidentiality.” In the letters, published in the Daily Mirror, Cregan described how he spends every day in the gym.He wrote: “I’m good bro just smashing the gym and playing snooker you know how it goes. Been doin pure circuits on the ward.”In another note, he described how his different after mainstream prison, where he was on a solitary wing, known as “the block”.Cregan wrote: “I’m on normal gym now. I just train hard and come back to the ward and either do a bit on the ward or just chill in my room. “It’s not ideal but it beats sitting on the block miles from home innit bro. Gym, phone call and a visit and I’m happy brother.” Dale Cregan, the gangster who murdered two policewomen, has boasted of “smashing the gym” and getting “pretty ripped” after being transferred to a psychiatric hospital.The 33-year-old also bragged that he is allowed to make pizza, play snooker and learn to kayak in a swimming pool at the secure unit, described by one source as “like a holiday camp”.In letters to a friend, Cregan revealed how his life at Ashworth high-security hospital, in Merseyside, is easier than that in mainstream prison, saying that it “beats sitting on the block miles from home”.Cregan is serving a life sentence for murdering unarmed police officers Fiona Bone, 32, and 23-year-old Nicola Hughes in September 2012.
