RESH Trains 130 Volunteers in Ebola Psychosocial Counseling

first_imgA local non-governmental organization, Renewed Energy Serving Humanity (RESH), has concluded a 3-day workshop aimed at training volunteers, who will be involved with counseling Ebola survivors, relatives and community members.At the close of the training, which was held at the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) High School on Camp Johnson Road in Monrovia, Ernest Garnark Smith, Jr., RESH coordinator told the volunteers that with their hearts of volunteerism and patriotism, they should diligently give back to humanity.He charged them that if they do not do that they would be on the wrong side of history by having acquired a skill to help and did nothing to help.He assured them that more refreshers trainings will be provided by both RESH and her partners in order to keep them abreast.Smith told the Daily Observer that RESH had embarked on the training in order to send her equipped and passionate volunteers, who he said are “emotionally and technically balanced,” for the counseling. He disclosed that the psychosocial aspect of the war against the deadly Ebola virus, was either non-existence or in the background with no attention from the stakeholders.Topics that the volunteers were tutored in included Community Sensitization and Significance in Psychosocial Supports, Trauma Counseling, Grief Counseling and Introduction to Temperament Analysis: An Effective Tools in the Help ProfessionRESH invited professional and renowned facilitators like the Rev. Olayee Collins, who is a clergyman, social worker and therapist; Rev. William P. Kilby, I, an educator, administrator, clergyman and counselor; Mrs. Varnetta Johnson-Freeman, a trainer, journalist, and an advocate of gender equity and good governance.RESH’s Coordinator himself a psychosocial counselor, social worker and freelance psychosocial author and poet also facilitated the workshop.RESH is a Liberian NGO, which provides psychosocial support to help combat Ebola, including counseling for patients and clinical staff. Desmond Tutu wins Templeton Prize

first_img5 April 2013South Africa’s Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has been awarded the 2013 Templeton Prize by the US-based Templeton Foundation for his work in advancing spiritual principles such as love and forgiveness.The prize was announced at the foundation’s headquarters in West Conshohocken in Pennsylvania and is valued at $1.7-million (about R15.6-million).It is the world’s largest annual monetary prize awarded to an individual.Tutu joins the ranks of 42 former winners of the prize, including the 2012 Prize Laureate the Dalai Lama and the 1973 winner Mother Theresa.“The prize honours a living person who has made exceptional contributions to affirming life’s spiritual dimension,” it says on www.templetonprize.org.It was established in 1972 by the late global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton.“Desmond Tutu calls upon all of us to recognise that each and every human being is unique in all of history and, in doing so, to embrace our own vast potential to be agents for spiritual progress and positive change,” the president and chairperson of the foundation, John M Templeton Jr, said in a video statement.“Not only does he teach this idea, he lives it.”There will be an award ceremony at the Guildhall in London on 21 May, when Tutu will officially receive the prize.A celebration will also be hosted on 11 April at St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, where Tutu served as Archbishop from 1986 to 1996.“When you are in a crowd and you stand out from the crowd it’s usually because you are being carried on the shoulders of others,” Tutu said.“I want to acknowledge all the wonderful people who accepted me as their leader at home and so to accept this prize in a representative capacity.”SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Eben Greyling the CEO of South African conglomera

first_imgEben Greyling, the CEO of South African conglomerate Naspers’ pay TV arm, owner of MultiChoice, has resigned to pursue new interests after over 18 years with the group.Greyling will be replaced by Jim Volkwyn, who was previously head of the group’s pay TV division before taking early retirement. According to Naspers, Greyling will continue to be work with the company on an ad hoc basis to provide assistance if required.Greyling’s departure is the latest in a series of management changes at Naspers. The group’s CEO, Koos Bekker, is stepping down today, to be replaced by head of e-commerce Bob van Dijk.“Eben has been instrumental in building our successful pay-TV businesses across the continent. Under his leadership over the last five years the subscriber base and turnover of the pay-TV businesses more than doubled,” said Bekker of Greyling’s departure.“We thank him for his great contribution and sterling service to the group.
