The strength of ruling BJP in the Manipur Assembly rose to 28 on Friday after the lone Trinamool Congress MLA and four Congress MLAs switched sides. Robindfro Singh, who won the elections in Trinamool Congress ticket, joined BJP on Friday. Congress MLAs Y. Surchandra, N. Haokip, O. Lukhoi and S. Bira too joined the ruling party on Friday. In the past T. Shyamkumar and G. Insuanhao Zou from Congress joined BJP. The BJP won 21 seats in the 60 member House during the recent elections. Falling short of nine MLAs to reach the halfway mark, it formed a coalition government with the support of splinter parties. Reacting to the development, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said, “It shows that more and more MLAs trust the leadership of Narendra Modi.”
People in Bengaluru may soon get access to Wi-fi at several public places in the next three months. The city authorities have decided to open 2,000 Wi-fi hotspots at various locations in the state capital. These public Wi-fi hotspots will be set up in various malls, metro stations and bus stations in the city, Gaurav Gupta, Principal Secretary, Industries, IT, Biotechnology, and Science and Technology told the Hindu. The 2,000 Wi-fi hotspots will be set up provided there are no hold-ups in regulatory clearances, Gupta added. The new service would prove especially helpful for people who have no data pack on their mobile phones or are facing low speed problem. The specific locations for these Wi-fi hotspots have already been marked. “We have identified 2,000 such spots and concluded the tender for vendors,” Gupta was quoted as saying in the report. Other than using the existing infrastructure, the plan may require further investment from vendors.“The Wi-fi devices can be installed on existing infrastructure and where infrastructure does not exist, vendors need to invest in them and pay the BBMP ground rent,” Gupta told the publication. This project was stuck at the city’s civic authority, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagra Palike (BBMP), because there was no clarity regarding the rentals of different types of telecom infrastructures. Installation of Wifi hotspots requires small poles while telecom towers are needed for providing internet service to a large area. The policy related to the rentals of telecommunication tower was approved by the BBMP council in July this year, and an annual charge of Rs 50,000 for each tower was formalized. The policy is pending approval with the state government, according to the report. However, BMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad said that all the issues are sorted out. “Pending approval of the telecom towers policy, we have decided to go ahead with the project,” he said.Bengaluru emerged as one of the top 25 high-tech cities in the world, according to a ranking released last year by research firm 2thinknow, that specializes in analyzing innovative cities. Bengaluru took the 19th spot, up from the 49th place it occupied last year. The city has a large population that relies on the internet for daily needs like hiring taxis, ordering food, and booking online tickets. Public Wi-fi in India can reach 40 million new users in India by 2019, adding $20 billion to the country’s GDP, according to recent report. Around 100 million people would spend an additional $2-3 billion per year on handsets and a similar amount on cellular mobile broadband services, the report by Analysys Mason, commissioned by Google, said last month. Google, which had earlier launched a partnership with RailTel and Indian Railways, is now planning to expand its public Wi-fi service to areas beyond railway stations in India, such as malls, cafes and universities, the Economic Times had earlier reported.Google currently offers public Wi-fi at 400 railway stations in the country, reaching about 7.6 million monthly active users. Sixth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea entered the final of Madrid Masters men’s doubles, beating fourth seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo 7-5, 6-7 (4), 12-10 in a tight contest. The Indo-Romanian pair started on a bright note after winning the first set 7-5 on Saturday. But they couldn’t capitalise on their ascendancy. They surrendered the second set in the tie-breaker after some tough fight. However, Bopanna and Mergea bounced back in the third set tie-breaker, displaying admirable skill and composure to snatch the contest 12-10 in the decider. The defending champions will face third-seeded pair of Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau in the title clash.Rojer-Tecau beat French pair of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) earlier on Saturday.
Indias Greco-Roman style wrestlers began their campaign on a successful note as Gurpreet Singh (77kg) and Sunil Kumar (87kg) delivered silver medals on Saturday, the penultimate day of the Asian Wrestling Championships. With this, India’s Greco-Roman wrestlers have done better than the last edition where they had won only a couple of bronze medals through Rajender Kumar (55kg) and Harpreet Singh (82kg).Sunil gave his all, but passivity cost him the gold as he went down 0-2 to Iran’s mighty Hossein Ahmad Nouri, the reigning Asian Games gold medallist who has three gold from the Asian Championships.Earlier, Sunil took care of Tokhirdzhon Okhonov of Tajikistan 14-7 in the quarter-finals and then followed it up with a win over Kazakhstan’s Azamat Kustubayev 6-6 in a ‘victory by fall’ verdict.”I wish I were a little bit more aggressive. That could have changed the colour of the medal. I will strive to train harder and do better in the upcoming tournaments. It’s also because I had a chance to train in Kazakhstan and training with foreign partners improved my standard,” said Sunil after the medal bout.Gurpreet brought India’s second silver medal of the day when he tasted a 0-8 defeat at the hands of South Korea’s Hyeonwoo Kim, who has 2012 Olympic gold, 2013 World Championships gold, and four Asian Championships gold medals.Gurpreet was impressive against Qatar’s Bakhit Sharif K Badr and earned a 10-0 victory by technical superiority in the last-eight clash. Gurpreet was made to work harder in the semi-finals where he narrowly edged Tamerlan Shadukayev of Kazakhstan 6-5.advertisementIn 55kg and 63kg, however, Indian wrestlers failed to make a mark. In 55kg quarters, Manjeet lost to Kyrgyzstan’s Asan Sulaimanov 3-5, while Vikram Krushnath Kurade went down to Jinwoong Jung of South Korea 0-8 in the same round in 63kg.The Greco-Roman wrestling competition will continue on the final day of the tournament. On Sunday, Gyanender (60kg), Ravinder (67kg), Yogesh (72kg), Harpreet Singh (82kg) and Hardeep Singh (97kg) will be in action. Also Read | Vinesh Phogat bags bronze in new weight category in Asian Wrestling Championships

Savannah State just could not keep up with Florida State.Clearly, Mother Nature has a heart. How else do you explain that thunderstorms forced the premature end of the carnage of Savannah State’s meeting with Florida State, a match up many believed should not have happened in the first place? The Tigers from the quaint Georgia coastal town had to feel like a condemned prisoner receiving a reprieve. Florida State led 55-0 with still 8:59 left in the third quarter. Clearly, the Seminoles were on their way to covering the largest betting line in college football history, which at one point last week reached 70 ½ points. But two long delays because of severe thunderstorms of 56 minutes and 40 minutes – and a forecast for more – forced officials to call the game, a reprieve of sorts for Savannah State.Yes, the Tigers lost 55-0. But it could have been worse. It likely would have been worse.Worse, even, than the 84-0 crushing Savannah State suffered last week at Oklahoma State. Why would the small school from the historically black college conference, the MEAC, endure such beatings? It was paid $860,000, that’s why. That goes a long way toward meeting its $5.1 million athletic budget. So, from a Savannah State business perspective, the end justified the means.“It would be really good for my perspective at Savannah if those two teams play for the national championship and you guys call me for my evaluation of the game because I’m the only one who has seen them both,” Savannah State coach Steve Davenport said. “But like I said before, it’s really a helpless feeling. Those two programs and those players are really, really tremendous players.“We knew we were coming in a bit overmatched. Now we just hopefully got to get this thing turned around.”But what about those who bet on the game? According to pregame.com, a sports gambling website, all wagers on the game will be refunded — college football bets aren’t official until 55 minutes have been played. Before weather jumped in to save Savannah State, Florida State racked up 255 yards in the first quarter while the Tigers were minus-20 yards.Florida State led 28-0 seven minutes into the game, 35-0 in the first quarter and 48-0 at halftime. The out-manned Tigers could do nothing to stop the No. 6 team in the country. But Mother Nature did.
CLEVELAND — After three titles in four seasons — two straight with Kevin Durant winning Finals MVP — it seems fair to begin questioning where Golden State sits in the conversation about the best teams of all-time. But the more compelling thing to analyze now might be whether the Warriors are better positioned to win at this level for a longer amount of time than the other modern-day dynasties the league has produced. And in looking at the vast array of things that make Golden State so dominant — from the club’s versatility and balance on both sides of the ball, its unselfishness on and off the court and its largely magic touch from a managerial standpoint — that feels like a real possibility.“Sometimes you come across those dynasties where you’re just outmatched, and it’s just their time,” Cavaliers guard George Hill said after his team had been swept on its home court.Stylistically, it is so difficult — arguably impossible — for anyone to truly replicate what the Warriors do. Even before the addition of arguably the league’s best pure scorer in Durant, Golden State possessed a point guard with the sort of 35-foot range that most players would only see in a practice setting. In the same backcourt, the Warriors had another guard who was arguably an even more accurate shooter, with a release that is the quickest in basketball — so fast that he doesn’t even need to have his feet set before he shoots.Put another way, this is the best shooting team the sport has ever seen. Golden State breaks defenses regardless of how well positioned or prepared they are. The Warriors were the best jump-shooting club in the NBA when left wide open this past season. And a closer look at the numbers shows the Dubs were also the best jump-shooting team in situations where a defender was draped all over them. Because of that, there really is no surefire way to guard this team.More often than not the Cavaliers, like the Rockets in the round before them, sought to use switches on defense to blanket Golden State’s offense. But in Game 2 of the Finals, the Warriors countered that predictable gameplan (and then changed things up in Game 3 in anticipation of a counterpunch), by using dump-off passes to spring give-and-go opportunities, or to set up lobs for JaVale McGee and Jordan Bell, who were often left all alone in the paint. The latter highlighted how the Warriors, in Bill Belichick fashion, have quietly been a chameleon of sorts by relying far more heavily on their bigs than most observers realize — even as they continue to be viewed as a club that relies solely on its dynamite 3-point shooting.Because of that constant evolution and comfort playing with different styles, the challenge of dethroning the champs could become even more difficult for challengers like the Rockets, who are so heavily vested in a singular type of play that it’s too difficult to adjust to something different if that style stops working in the middle of a postseason series. While the young average age of Warriors’ core would seem to be a plus in their quest to become the best team of all-time, they’re actually not all that unusual when it comes to how young they are when compared to modern NBA clubs that have won three titles in four years. Armstrong27 If there’s something that makes this team different — and gives it better odds of winning for a greater amount of time — it’s that this group of highly talented players doesn’t seem as likely to be torn apart by the retirements, contract issues and jealousies that trouble other clubs in this spot. The Lakers of the late 1980s began running out of steam when then-coach Pat Riley resigned, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar retired and then halted entirely when Magic Johnson abruptly left the game following his shocking HIV diagnosis. No one knows how many consecutive titles the Bulls might have won had it not been for Michael Jordan’s retirements from the Bulls. And the infamous infighting between Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant shortened what likely could have been a longer run of success with the two Los Angeles superstars in the early 2000s.By contrast, the Warriors have already become the new-age San Antonio Spurs, as a number of their players have acted in the best interest of the team by taking much smaller deals than they could have. That attitude, illustrated by Durant, Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala1Iguodala did this with his initial deal to join the Warriors. This past summer, he actually maneuvered to have the Warriors pay him more than what they initially expected to fork up. and Shaun Livingston, makes some of the long-term salary math more feasible in a league where these sorts of things can create strain on a star-laden club. (With Curry having just signed a five-year deal last July, and Durant saying he’ll stay with Golden State this summer, the next key player to look at is Thompson, who is slated to be a 2019 free agent. But even that may not be a concern, as he’s reportedly spoken with the Warriors about the possibility of taking a deeply discounted extension that would see him leave up to $50 million on the table.)The players’ willingness to often take less than market value, even for bit pieces like Zaza Pachulia, has allowed the Warriors to improve the roster on the margins each year — sprinkling in specific attributes that the team lacks. With McGee in particular, Golden State took a minimal risk by signing (then cheaply re-signing) a player who had a less-than-stellar reputation around the league, but was incredibly long and athletic — two things the Warriors lacked in a traditional center. Fast forward to this year’s Finals, and the one-time castaway was pestering LeBron James, the best player in the world, anytime he sought to get to the basket.James, whose own upcoming free agency could play a role in nixing the Warriors’ dominance the next few years, pointed out another advantage Golden State possesses: Brainpower. “Everyone’s trying to figure it out: How do you put together a group of talent, but also a group of minds, to compete with Golden State and compete for a championship?” James asked.Ascending teams may not like the idea of waiting out Golden State’s reign. Aside from how young the team’s core is, the players who compose it don’t depend much on raw athleticism. It’s likely they will age gracefully, given how well they shoot from outside and play off the ball.Injuries are a different story, and they can always come into play; particularly with Curry, whose presence has always been a deciding factor with this club. But short of that, the team is full of two-way talent and should be fine on D as long as it’s anchored by Draymond Green and long, versatile wings that make it possible to switch the way the Warriors do. (Still, Golden State would be wise to try to start the process of locating a younger, less polished version of Iguodala, given how different the Warriors looked at times without the 34-year-old this postseason.) The club has ranked in the top 10 defensively each of the past four seasons it reached the Finals.Coach Steve Kerr has made no secret of the other factor that could eventually catch up with his team, which at times struggles with complacency. Specifically, he’s talked about the weight of expectations, and the toll that comes with taking every opposing team’s best shot for years on end. And this season, Kerr said, was the toughest playoff run he’s overseen with Golden State.“I remember sitting in this room three years ago, and it seemed like a dream. This feels more like reality,” Kerr said Friday, perhaps a realization of the fact that titles are now expected as opposed to being hoped for. “And I hope that doesn’t sound arrogant. It’s just that the talent we have, and that’s the experience we’ve gained.”There are any number of things that could turn out to be the Warriors’ downfall. But Golden State also has a handful of factors to hang its dynastic hat on for the time being.— Neil Paine contributed research.

Eight wildland fire personnel from the Division of Forestry assisted firefighters from the Anchor Point Volunteer Fire Department, Ninilchik Emergency Services and Central Emergency Services to stop the spread of the fire. The fire was declared contained at approximately 4 p.m. With warmer-than-normal temperatures and early snow melt this spring, pre-green-up conditions on the Kenai Peninsula and most other areas around the state are very dry and vulnerable to wildfire. The dead, dry grass and brush are receptive to any ignition sources and residents should use caution with any kind of burning and other activities that could spark a wildfire. The fire was reported at 1:18 p.m. The fire started in a subdivision in the area of Oil Well Road and Bluff Drive.Ninilchik Emergency Services was first to arrive on scene and the fire was burning in grass, moving northeast up a bluff toward several homes. At least two homes immediately threatened by the fire were evacuated and the fire damaged siding on one home as it passed by. Firefighters were able to douse the fire before the structure became fully involved. Print accelerated its steady decline, falling off a cliff in the first 6 months. Revenue was down 7.1 percent over 2013—a drop nearly two-thirds further than the industry suffered in either of the last two years. Alone, the second quarter was even worse. Print revenue was down 9.9 percent in Q2. B2B growth was almost nonexistent for the first half of 2014, according to the latest BIN report from ABM.Overall, raw revenue was up 2.5 percent year-over-year to $13.4 billion. Adjusted for inflation, the gain was just 0.4 percent. While still in positive territory, the slow first half all but negates the momentum from a strong 2013—revenue was up 4.8 percent for the full year, including a 4.4-percent bump in the first half. No one’s gasping at print declines, but the slowed growth of events, digital and data products raise eyebrows.Events still account for almost 45 percent of overall industry revenue (roughly, $6 billion), but grew just 2.2 percent through June. That’s half the rate of growth from two years ago. The report blames “weak exhibition performance in the construction, business, education and non-profit sectors” for the decline.See also: The 2014 B2B CEO Survey Digital advertising had the strongest start to 2014 with a 15.7-percent growth rate, though even that fell off from prior marks—revenue from digital rose a whopping 24.8 percent in the first half of last year. Increases that high weren’t sustainable, but this much of a regression is notable.Digital’s overall share of revenue has increased 5 percent since 2012 however, now accounting for more than 20 percent of all B2B earnings. It’s on pace to out-earn print by the end of the year.Data services fell into the same pattern. At 4.5 percent, growth was down significantly from the first halves of 2012 and 2013. It’s still a small slice of the overall pie at 10 percent of total revenue.

Ghaziabad: A man, who suspected his wife of adultery, killed her and their three kids and later committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district, police said on Friday. The incident occurred late on Thursday night, they added. Parents of the couple, who used to live with them, informed Masuri Police Station that the deceased did not wake up despite repeated knocking on their room door, which was bolted from inside. They then peeped in through the window to witness the gruesome scene, said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ghaziabad Sudhir Kumar Singh. The EU announced an urgent investigation Wednesday after hackers with possible links to China accessed thousands of sensitive diplomatic cables. In the latest embarrassing data breach to hit a major international organisation, the New York Times reported that hackers using similar techniques to the Chinese military gained entry to EU communications. The cables from European Union diplomatic missions around the world reveal anxiety about how to handle US president Donald Trump as well as concerns about the behaviour of China, Russia and Iran. The leak, discovered by cybersecurity firm Area 1, recalls the publication by Wikileaks of a vast haul of US State Department cables in 2010, though in the EU case the trove is much smaller and consists of less secret communications, the NYT reported.EU officials said they have begun a probe into the leak, which comes with Europe on high alert for malign online activity in the run-up to key parliamentary elections in May next year.”The Council Secretariat is aware of allegations regarding a potential leak of sensitive information and is actively investigating the issue,” the EU Council, which represents member states, said.”The Council Secretariat does not comment on allegations nor on matters relating to operational security. The Council Secretariat takes the security of its facilities, including its IT systems, extremely seriously.”In one cable, the EU’s diplomatic mission in Moscow describes the controversial summit in Helsinki in July between Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin as “successful (at least for Putin)”.Another gives a detailed account of a meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping in which he rails against Trump’s trade tactics, saying the US was “behaving as if it was fighting in a no-rules freestyle boxing match” and vowing not to give in to “bullying”.There are extensive reports on the situation in Ukraine, where a conflict rumbles on between government forces and pro-Russian separatists, including a warning dating from February that Moscow may already have deployed nuclear warheads in Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.The NYT said that, according to Area 1, the techniques used by the hackers over the course of three years were similar to those used by an elite Chinese military unit. The hackers apparently gained access to the diplomatic communications network after a simple “phishing” campaign targeting EU officials in Cyprus with mails designed to trick them into downloading hacking tools. Many of the cables are run-of-the-mill weekly reports from missions around the world, detailing conversations with leaders and officials, the NYT said.More sensitive, classified communications are handled on a different, more secure system.
By Micha Green, AFRO Washington, D.C. Editor, email@example.comSome of the most nationally recognized Marylanders happen to be Black, were slaves and made a huge impact on American history; yet they’re just now getting statues in the Maryland State House. Abolitionists Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, who famously helped over 300 slaves escape the South into freedom, will be memorialized in the Old House of Delegates Chamber, and while people are pleased about the decision, some lawmakers are critical of how the statues are coming to be.The Maryland Board of Public Works, which includes Gov. Larry Hogan (R), Comptroller Peter Franchot (D) and Treasurer Nancy Kopp (D), voted 3-0 to erect statues in honor of Douglass and Tubman.Abolitionists Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, who famously helped over 300 slaves escape the South into freedom, will be memorialized in the Old House of Delegates Chamber. (Courtesy Photos)Maryland House of Delegates speaker Michael Busch (D- District 30A, Anne Arundel County) remarked on the importance of including Douglass and Tubman in the State House.“The Maryland State House tells the story of our state and our country,” Busch said in a statement according to The Baltimore Sun. “But there has been a critical component missing inside the walls of the State House: the important contributions of African-Americans to that story. These statues will fill that missing gap and I’m pleased to see this project moving forward,” said Busch, who has been advocating for the statues since 2016.The Department of General Services recommended that $575,000 be awarded to The Christman Co. of Sterling, Va., which would be contractually responsible for completing the statues in 390 days. A sculptor from StudioEIS, a firm from Brooklyn, NY will be tasked with the creation of the statues.Despite the excitement surrounding the decision to erect the bronze memorials, certain lawmakers were concerned with the businesses the state is choosing for the project as well as the time the pieces will take to construct.Del. R. Julian Ivey (D- 47A, Prince George’s County) raised concerns about not using a minority business when considering who to collaborate with for statue construction.“If the state of Maryland is going to honor Ms. Tubman and Mr. Douglass, we need to do it the right way,” Ivey wrote in a letter to the board according to a Baltimore Sun report.Board member Franchot agreed with Ivey and felt that a Maryland artist would have been a stronger option as well.“Couldn’t we find a very talented sculptor right here in Maryland?” Franchot said.Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller (D-27, Calvert County) expressed his concern in the length of time it will take the company to construct the statue.“I’ve been asking for them for two years,” Miller said, who had been advocating for the statues with Busch. “They were supposed to be ready and installed in March. They tell me it’s going to be another year. What kind of nonsense is that?”Ivan Schwartz, director and founder of StudioEIS, who plans to present designs of the statue next month when he meets with General Services Department and the Maryland State Archives, said the work takes time and precision.“You have to do it well,” he said. “There’s a very high level of skill and craft. In terms of representation, we try to go back to source material,” he said.StudioEIS also did a George Washington statue that stands in the Maryland State House, which is part of the reason their services were recommended again. “I’ve measured George Washington’s clothing. I’ve photographed some of Frederick Douglass’ clothing,” Schwartz said, about his process in ensuring the historical accuracy of the statues.Miller is anxious about the construction of the statues to ensure all of Maryland’s history is shared with those who visit the historic State House.“We want a place where students walk from the Senate chamber, have the picture taken with George Washington, walk over to the House chamber and have their picture taken with Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, which is important because — guess what — Maryland rejected the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendment,” Miller said according to The Baltimore Sun. “They denied those rights, but we want to make sure people understand where we were then and where we are today.”
